What We Ordered & Full Review

Deep Fried Chicken with Potato Salad ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Comfort food perfection. The fried chicken arrived golden and crispy with a satisfying crunch that echoed through the breading. The meat inside stayed juicy and tender, properly seasoned throughout, not just on the surface. This is Austrian backhendl done right.

The potato salad deserves special mention. Unlike mayonnaise-heavy versions, Austrian potato salad is dressed with vinegar, oil, and broth, creating a lighter, more refreshing accompaniment. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, the dressing balanced with just enough tang to cut through the richness of the fried chicken.

Käsespätzle – Pasta in Melted Cheese with Deep Fried Onions & Leaf Salad ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Austrian mac and cheese on steroids. Käsespätzle is one of those dishes that sounds simple but delivers incredible satisfaction. Homemade spätzle (soft egg noodles) are layered with melted alpine cheese, creating strings of gooey, savory heaven with every forkful.

The deep fried onions on top provided essential textural contrast, crispy, sweet, and caramelized against the soft, creamy pasta. The leaf salad served alongside offered a fresh, crisp counterpoint that helped balance the richness.

Augustiner Bräu Salzburg Lager Beer ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The perfect Austrian tavern pairing. Augustiner Bräu is Salzburg’s most famous brewery, and their lager is crisp, clean, and refreshing, exactly what you want after a day of sightseeing. Properly poured with a nice head, it embodied everything we love about Austrian beer culture.

Final Verdict

Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Bärenwirt delivered exactly what we hoped for, authentic Austrian tavern cooking, generous portions, cozy atmosphere, and excellent value. The deep fried chicken was crispy perfection, the käsespätzle was satisfyingly rich, and the overall experience captured the warmth of traditional Austrian hospitality.

This isn’t fine dining, and it’s not trying to be. It’s honest, hearty, comforting food served in a genuine Austrian setting, which is precisely what makes it special. After a day of exploring Mozart’s city, Bärenwirt was the perfect conclusion.

Would we return? Absolutely. Next time we’d try the Schweinsbraten and probably order another Augustiner Bräu.
